On the Road at The Growing Place

(August 8, 2021) If anything good came out of the pandemic, it had to do with gardening. Last year, we reported on the number of new gardeners during 2020. COVID-19 refuses to let go, but gardeners are hanging in there. So, why (safely) not take the show on the road? It’s been a long time. We’re streaming live from The Growing Place in Aurora this morning. We can’t wait to talk plants with the staff and trees with our buddy Skeet from Bartlett Tree Experts.

Depending on the source, somewhere between 16 and 21 million Americans took up gardening last year. The latest research shows that, in 2021, people still want to grow things. We we’ll do everything we can to help them.

Up close and personal

An advantage of being on the road and on site is that we can look at trees and shrubs up close. In fact, Skeet and garden center manager Michael Massat will walk around the grounds as they talk about the plants. Skeet, of course, will focus on trees and tree care. But Massat will look at Hydrangeas for Every Garden.

By the way, Skeet has a great information sheet about Watering Your Trees. We’re still operating at a water deficit, so keep an eye on your trees! He also want you look at the Home, Yard and Garden Pest Newsletter from the University of Illinois Extension. The most recent issue contains information about grubs and the spotted lanternfly. One more publication that you should subscribe to is the Plant Health Care Report from the Morton Arboretum. That issue also looks at grubs, as well as milkweed beetles and bugs.

If you live out near Aurora, we hope you can join us on the road on Sunday morning. The Growing Place is located at 2000 Montgomery Road, Aurora, IL 60504. As usual, our show starts at 9am Central Time. However, the garden center doesn’t open until 10am. You can’t miss us. We’ll be right inside the entrance. Hope to see you there!
