September 30, 2017 – LIVE from the SCARCE Green Fair!
Peggy and I love hitting the road and broadcasting from events of all shapes and sizes (you may take that as a hint to talk to us about that whenever you like). Today, we’re pleased to be part of the SCARCE Green Fair at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.
If you’re not familiar with SCARCE, the acronym stands for School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education. Which is why we always just say “SCARCE.” While they are known for their Book Rescue, SCARCE is known to recycle and reuse just about anything that they can get their hands on–from crayons to musical instruments to eyeglasses to bowling balls to LP records to corks to buttons to Christmas lights…and lots more.
Each year SCARCE puts together a Green Fair, where they do much of the same work they do year round–except they invite folks from all over Chicagoland to participate. This year, they have some special activities, including
- Recycling Extravaganza
- Farmer’s Market
- Beekeeper Presentation
- Environmental Speakers
- Upcycled Maker Space for Kids
and that’s just getting us started. Peggy and I hope to highlight a lot of this during our broadcast this morning. There are also a bunch of booths and vendors, and they feature
- Green Practices
- Energy Efficient Vehicles
- Renewable Energy – solar & wind
- Green & Upcycled Products
- Energy Efficiency
- Water Conservation
- Money-Saving Products
- Composting
- Green Landscaping
We’re going to start our show, of course, with the woman who started all of this more than twenty-five years ago, Kay McKeen, and one of her right hand gals, Bev Jaszczurowski. Among the other folks we’ll be chatting with are Kimberly Elam, who started Kimmer’s Ice Cream in St. Charles and has since expanded to Wheaton. She has received a fair amount of attention, and even awards, for her shops, which specialize in “gourmet and eclectic” flavors…and we hope she brings some samples.
We’ll also be talking to the folks at Three Plaid Farmers, who have 20 collective years of organic farming under their belts and run a CSA in Winfield that also serves Evanston, Glen Ellyn and Chicago. And we’ll spend some time with the Prairie Food Co-op, which is a full-service community owned grocery store in Lombard featuring local, sustainably grown, organic produce, meat and dairy products, as well as all of the other staples you’d expect from a grocery store.
Who knows who else might show up within range of our microphones?
SCARCE and The Mike Nowak Show send a shout out to the sponsors for the Green Fair–
